Chris Jones shares a new instructional method technical variation of our tsuki sayunage technique. He pairs the standard ukenagashi deflection with a simultaneous atemi with the secondary hand. It's an interesting variation that Matsuoka Sensei thinks is worth exploration. Our initial conclusions are that this variation serves as an excellent training tool for those learning the technique (assists with proper entry distance) and as a practical application, it makes for a more reliable throw when facing a taller opponent. One apparent disadvantage of this variation is that it's less flexible in it's ability to adapt to a non-linear strike (roundhouse or other angled strike). We will continue to explore this variation and update everyone with our findings.
