A short primer on using grab releases in randori. Moving beyond basic static wrist grabs, we explore free form grabs in a dynamic scenario.
While it’s natural to practice and refine the throws and deflections used in randori, one typically under-trained skill is the grab release. At brown belt levels, only some are able to clear the initial charge of attackers and fewer are able to successfully execute a series of throws afterwards. However, in virtually every attempt, the nage is eventually caught.
Understanding how to escape from grabs and clear attackers is a skill that will almost always be put to use in randori. Being able to escape from a free-form dynamic grab also has tremendous self-defense applicability, especially for women.
Participants in this small group training session are Billy Vincenty and Karen Kim.
